About Us

OPAL scientists have played a strong role in U.S. and international ocean observing system efforts since 2002. We are founding and participanting members of the Northeast Regional Association of Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (NERACOOS), a network that provides real time ocean and coastal data across the Gulf of Maine. We also work closely with NOAA’s Ocean Acidification program office, having operating one of the first U.S. coastal ocean CO2 measurement buoys near the Isles of Shoals full-time since 2006. Links to numerous related OPAL buoy and field datasets can be found at our data access webpage.
