Dr. Jennifer L. Miksis-Olds is Director of the Center for Acoustics Research and Education and Research Professor in the School of Marine Science & Ocean Engineering at the University of New Hampshire, also holding a research position in the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping. She is currently serving as the Interim Vice President for Research and Innovation at UNH. She is a Scientific Advisor to the Sound and Marine Life Joint Industry Programme (International Oil & Gas Producers). Most recently, she is the Chair of the National Research Council committee on Ocean Acoustics Education and Expertise. Dr. Miksis-Olds was the recipient of an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program award in 2011 and the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering in 2013. Dr. Miksis-Olds received her A.B. cum laude in Biology from Harvard University, her M.S. in Biology from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth; she was a guest student at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, and then received her Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island. Her primary research interests are patterns and trends in ocean soundscapes, animal behavior and communication, and the environmental effects of anthropogenic activities.
Dr. Bruce Martin is JASCO’s Director of Applied Sciences, responsible for the design, implementation, and analysis of acoustic programs for baseline studies and measurements of the effects of man-made sources on the soundscape. Recent projects have included the Chukchi Sea acoustic monitoring project (2007-2016), Tappan Zee River baseline acoustic monitoring (Martin and Popper 2016), Pile Driving Demonstration and Production Monitoring projects (2010-2014), as well as the Outer Continental Shelf Acoustic Monitoring project for BOEM (2009-2014). Bruce is the Primary Investigator for a study of the marine mammals and effects of human activity on Canada’s east coast that has deployed 20 acoustic recorders identical to the ones proposed for ADEON for a two-year program. ADEON will leverage the tools developed in these programs. Bruce has a PhD in Oceanography at Dalhousie University (2019) where he developed automated techniques for quantifying the contribution to the soundscape from natural, anthropogenic, and biologic sources.
Dr. David Buck is Associate Director at Shoals Marine Laboratory (SML) and is responsible for the management of SML’s undergraduate programs, including administration and oversight of the lab’s marine science academic curriculum and supervision of SML’s undergraduate research program. He also coordinates activities of visiting researchers on Appledore. Prior to joining SML, David was the co-Director of the Center for Mercury Studies at Biodiversity Research Institute (SML). He served as lead and co-lead on multiple Natural Resource Damage Assessment and Restoration (NRDAR) programs conducted in collaboration with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He also served as an international consultant to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and other UN agencies on global projects related to the Minamata Convention on Mercury. David received his B.A. from UNC-Chapel Hill and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Florida.
Dr. Thomas Butkiewicz is a Research Assistant Professor in the Center for Coastal & Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Ithaca College, where he focused on computer graphics and virtual reality research. At The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, he designed and developed new interactive geospatial visualization techniques, receiving a Masters in Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2010. After a year as a research scientist at The Charlotte Visualization Center, he joined CCOM as a post-doctoral research fellow. Dr. Butkiewicz specializes in creating highly interactive visualizations, which allow users to perform complex visual analysis on geospatial datasets through unique, intuitive exploratory techniques. His research interests also include multi-touch and natural interfaces, virtual reality, stereoscopic displays, and image processing/computer vision. His current research projects include visual analysis of 4D dynamic ocean simulations, using Microsoft's Kinect device to enhance multi-touch screens and provide new interaction methods, multi-touch gesture research, and developing new interface approaches for sonar data cleaning.
Dr. Anthony P. Lyons is a Research Professor in the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping and the Associate Director for Research in the Center for Acoustics Research and Education. He received a B.S. in Physics from Henderson State University (Arkadelphia, AR) and a PhD in Oceanography from Texas A&M University. Dr. Lyons' previous positions include the Fine-Scale Acoustics and Oceanography Group at the SACLANT Undersea Research Centre, La Spezia, Italy, and a Senior Scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State and Professor of Acoustics in Penn State’s Graduate Program in Acoustics. He spent a sabbatical in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, and has also worked for the US Office of Naval Research Global. His research projects include studies of shallow-water acoustic propagation, acoustic interaction with the seafloor, characterization of seafloor sediments, and high-resolution oceanographic measurements. Dr. Lyons was awarded the Institute of Acoustics' (U.K.) A.B. Wood Medal in 2003. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a member of the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society.
Meredith O'Shea is the Research Data Manager for the Center for Acoustics Research and Education, including the cabled ocean observation project. Meredith has experience coordinating and managing multi-year academic research projects, administering data in support of FAIR principles (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable), and serving as a liaison with the projects’ research team, funders, and state, federal, and international agencies. At the University of New Hampshire, Meredith directed NH’s federally-funded Preschool Development Grant, related to State-supported services for families with young children. Meredith previously supported projects at Harvard University utilizing mathematical disease modeling to inform global public health decision making related to cervical cancer and maternal mortality. Meredith holds a Masters in Developmental Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelors in Russian and International Affairs from the University of New Hampshire.
