Seminar: Exploring Ionosphere/Thermosphere Dynamics During Geospace Storms

Wednesday, November 18, 2020 - 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Speaker: Dong Lin, Postdoctoral Fellow, High Altitude Observatory, National Center for Atmospheric Research

Abstract: The ionosphere/thermosphere (I/T) system is a top layer of the Earth’s atmosphere which is partially ionized and constitutes a critical part of the geospace environment. During geospace storms, the I/T system absorbs a greatly enhanced input of electromagnetic and particle energy from the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction, and exerts feedback on the magnetosphere via plasma conductivity and mass outflow. In this presentation, I will give a review on the role of the I/T system during geospace storms and share recent progress by the NASA DRIVER Science Center for Geospace Storms (CGS) team, using our newly developed Multiscale Atmosphere Geospace Environment (MAGE) model. These highlights will include the self-consistent simulation of the subauroral polarization streams (SAPS), polar tongue of ionization (TOI) structures and polar cap patches, as well as travelling atmospheric/ionospheric disturbances (TADs/TIDs). The simulation results show good agreement with observations and reveal the intrinsically multiscale nature of the solar wind-geospace coupling during storms. These results demonstrate and emphasize the need for a multiscale whole geospace model in order to systematically investigate and understand the cross-scale coupling and the cause-effect relationships in the stormtime geospace.
